The 12 Labors of Heracles

The main reason why Heracles had to complete the 12 labors was because, after having been driven into madness by Hera and killing his wife Megara and his children , the Greek hero wanted to look for redemption (Riordan 2000)   Upon arriving at the temple in Delphi, the oracle stated that in order for the Greek Hero to find peace in his soul, he has to travel to the city of Mycenae and serve Eurystheus  for twelve years. (Riordan 2000)   However there has been many interpretation to why the famous Greek hero obeyed Eurystheus ,who is far less superior to Heracles. (Grimal 1996)) According to the Illad written by the Greek poet Homer, after Zeus had announced that the first child to be born into the race of Perseides will have the power to rule over the city Argos. (Grimal 1996) The goddess Hera requested the goddess of childbirth, Eilthyia to delay the birth of Heracles and advance the birth of Eurystheus. (Grimal 1996)As a result this made it necessary for Heracles to obey his cousin Eurystheus  (Grimal 1996) However according to another poet named Diotimus, he believed that Eurystheus and Heracles were in fact lovers, and it was because of the love that Heracles had for Eurystheus  , which made Heracles obeyed him. (Grimal 1996) Lastly it was stated the first six labors took place in Peloponnese whereas the other six took place around the world. (Grimal 1996)
